All about membership

The Berkeley City Club is more than a event venue, historic hotel and fine dining restaurant.

We are proud to be a private social club – inspiring friendships, memories and fun – since our inception in 1930.

We started as a private women’s club, with the building entirely funded by Berkeley women.

In 1962, the charter was updated from Berkeley Women’s City Club to Berkeley City Club and men were welcome to join in membership.

In the great years of our history, events, meetings and parties have been held, food and drink shared, laps swum and much more.

Decades of memories

With a building almost 85 years in existence, a lot of history has been made.

The building itself is an architectural masterpiece constructed in just 11 months.

The pool has always been a favorite spot for visitors to the building.  When it was dedicated in 1930, hundreds of Berkeley women attended.

Today, only Club members and hotel guests may swim in its waters.  It is a sought-after indoor pool of many due to its beauty and historic nature.

Did you know that our current fine dining restaurant, Julia’s, used to be a private dining room exclusively for Club Members?

At one time in our history, the beautiful floors were covered in carpet.  Before our 2012 unveiling as Julia’s restaurant, we pulled up the carpet to reveal the (stunning) original floors.  Beautifully preserved, they stand out in all of their glory and are enjoyed by all.

If you want to see and learn more about our beautiful building, join us this Sunday (and most 4th Sundays of each month) with a complimentary docent tour.

Tours run from 1pm – 3:30pm and last approximately 30 minutes.

If you have questions about the tours, contact the Berkeley City Club Conservancy.

The beauty of Spring

This time of year is so beautiful.

Flowers blooming, trees showing off their finery with pops of color and the sunlight cascading in to accompany the longer days upon us.

Today, we celebrate Spring by sharing some of our favorite floral images with you!

This is definitely a favorite image around the Berkeley City Club.  Not only is the yellow stunning, but it is an unexpected pop of color, amidst the quiet elegance of the Ballroom walls.

Or, imagine sitting right here for Dinner and seeing the stunning beauty in all of these flowers?

Something so lovely about this arrangement is that not only can you cherish those beautiful pink roses, but if you look into the mirror, you can savor the beauty of the space around you even more in the arches and columns.

We hope you enjoyed these beautiful flowers and we wish you a happy Spring!

Love in the details

Some of the special things that take a wedding up a notch are in the details.

We love unique things that make a statement while still carrying on a timeless, elegant feel.

We invite you to draw inspiration and ideas from these images or to just enjoy the eye candy!

Little lovebirds and flowers.  Symbols of their love…

Your guests mouths begin to water before even entering the Ballroom as they smell the amazing food from the Kitchen nearby.

There is something about this display of macaroons that just draws you to them.

Perhaps the beautiful pastel colors or having a sneaking suspicion they will be “melt in your mouth” good.  Either way, I am going to savor one.  Only one.

I just love knowing the story behind their choice for macaroons – and even explained eloquently for all of their guests.

A “Wedding Wish Vase” – such a lovely idea.

A bit about lovebirds.  We wish this couple a lifetime of happiness and a lovebird sighting!
